Sjögren’s Syndrome
Sjögren’s syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects exocrine glands, causing dryness of the eyes and mouth. It can occur in isolation or in association with other autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.
Symptoms:
- Dry eyes (sensation of grit in the eyes);
- Dry mouth (difficulty swallowing, frequent cavities);
- Chronic fatigue and joint pain.
Treatment:
- Artificial tears and artificial saliva;
- Medications to stimulate secretions (pilocarpine);
- Management of complications and associated diseases.
With early diagnosis and proper care, symptoms can be managed, and patients’ quality of life can be improved.
